In 1995, Pillay became the first Black woman appointed as a judge of South Africa’s High Court, marking a significant milestone in the country’s judicial history.
Key Contributions to International Justice
Pillay’s career has included several important roles in international law. She served as a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, where she later became its president. Her work contributed to landmark developments in international criminal law, including the recognition that sexual violence can constitute genocide under specific circumstances.

During her tenure at the United Nations, she advocated for human rights, equality, accountability and the protection of vulnerable populations.
Pillay has also held senior roles in international investigations and legal proceedings, including chairing a United Nations commission of inquiry on the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel, from 2021 to 2025.
Why Did Navi Pillay Receive the Nobel Peace Prize?
The Nobel Committee recognised Pillay for her efforts to promote peace and international law. Her career has focused on strengthening accountability for serious international crimes and reinforcing the principle that individuals and governments must be subject to the law.
The award also draws attention to the importance of international legal institutions at a time when their authority and independence face significant challenges.
Pillay received news of the award while attending a legal conference in Nuremberg, Germany. Following the announcement, she dedicated the prize to survivors of international crimes and those working to defend international justice.
A Moment of Recognition for Indian Tamil Heritage
Pillay’s Indian Tamil ancestry has attracted attention in India and among Tamil communities worldwide. Although she is South African by nationality, her family background connects her story to the wider Tamil diaspora.
Her achievement is particularly notable because her career spans the struggle against apartheid, international criminal tribunals and the promotion of human rights through the United Nations.
The award recognises her individual contributions to international justice rather than her ethnic background, while also highlighting the global reach of the Tamil diaspora.
Nobel Peace Prize Award Ceremony
The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize will be formally presented in Oslo, Norway, on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. The prize carries a monetary award of 12 million Swedish kronor.
Pillay’s selection places her among the distinguished recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize whose work has shaped international discussions on peace, justice and human rights.
Her recognition underscores the continuing importance of the rule of law, accountability and the protection of human dignity in efforts to build a more peaceful world.
