India's higher education sector has added nearly 3.65 lakh teachers over the past decade, according to an SBI Research report. The increase reflects the expansion of higher education institutions and the growing number of students seeking university and college education.
Despite the growth in the teaching workforce, a substantial proportion of sanctioned teaching positions remain vacant. According to the report, around 34 per cent of teaching posts continue to be unfilled, highlighting the staffing challenges faced by institutions.

Teacher availability is an important factor in maintaining the quality of higher education. A shortage of faculty can increase the workload on existing teachers and potentially affect classroom interaction, academic mentoring and research activities.
The issue is particularly relevant as India's higher education system continues to expand and institutions focus on improving research, innovation and employability. Universities and colleges require qualified faculty members not only for teaching but also for research and industry collaboration.
The latest figures have once again brought attention to the need for faster recruitment, better faculty development and stronger academic infrastructure across India's higher education sector.
